I recommend everyone look at their credit card annual statement. I found 3 hotels bookings we had cancelled in 2016 and had email proof on, $1,300 in all -- were never refunded! The bookings were made on Hotwire, Expedia and one directly with a hotel. In all cases the refund for your booking has to be made by the hotel you booked and cancelled. If the front desk there is busy, incompetent or corrupt, your refund will fall between the cracks. Add a third party like Hotwire or Expedia notifying the hotel of your cancellation -- that adds another level of potential error and you are even less likely to get your refund as expected.
