I purchased a Samsung A3 smartphone from Walmart in Laurel MANSYaryland. Almost immediately after leaving the store, I decided I did not want the phone. I placed the unopened phone along with the receipt in the trunk of my car where it remained for approximately a week. After losing $500 at the casino in Arundel Mills Maryland, on my way home I decided to stop by the adjacent Walmart to return my smartphone. I patiently waited for the lone return clerk to complete the transaction with the customer in front of me. Finally it's my turn, I stepped up with the pristine receipt in one hand and the unopened box with the phone inside in the other.

"I would like to return this phone," I said. The clerk looked at me as if I where something smelly she'd stepped in clinging to the sole of her shoe. She examined the box. Scan the barcode. She examined the box yet again.

"This box isn't even opened," she said looking at me with disgust.

"I'm going to have to get approval from the manager," she snapped.

"I have the phone. I have the receipt. What is the problem?" I asked angrily.

"We have to verify the serial number on electronic purchases," the manager, now at the counter, said. I was, at long last, issued a full refund.

If this is Walmart's policy, its Walmart policy. I have absolutely no problem if the manager has to verify the serial number for every Walmart customer returning Electronics. It just makes no sense to me. What is the purpose of the sales receipt? Moreover, with all the electronics Walmart sales, it seems the manager is going to be spending a lot of time at the return counter. I've been in retail over 40 years. I've managed stores for large retail chains. I've owned stores. I spend a lot of time around loss prevention. I also returned a smart phone to the Laurel Walmart about 2 years ago with receipt, no questions asked. I hope I'm wrong, I just get this sickening feeling I was profiled?
