I tried today to return 5 unopened unused boxes of Equate Pain Relieving Cream to the WalMart in Fridley, Minnesota, they were less than $4.00 each. I did not have the receipt. The first lady said no problem, they could give me in-store credit because the total is under $25.00, but I had to have my ID, and didn't have it right there with me.
So I went out to get it from the car and when I came back with it, another lady was there who told me no, they won't accept these returns because they were from the Pharmacy department.
That didn't make sense to me and I told them so and left. While I was waiting in the car for my wife who was still shopping in the store, I called from my cell phone and asked for the Manager and told her about this, saying that makes sense for prescriptions but does it really apply to these ? Soap and shampoo and many other things are in the same aisle/department, does that apply to those as well ?
Well, now I was told something different, that so many people are now stealing things then trying to return them for cash, that they now have had to implement a rule that is that they do not accept any returns from some departments at all without the receipt. It did not matter that one of these things I wanted to return would not easily fit into a pocket, let alone 5 of them, and of course if someone was going to do that they would be smarter about it and pick something smaller, pocketable, and more valuable.
I hung up with her thinking that explains it I guess but what is this world coming to ? Then I thought some more and realized that that logic must apply to every department in the store, meaning that they do not accept any returns at all without a receipt. And, that must be a new policy, because over many years we've shopped at WalMart and have had a number of occasions where we have returned items without a receipt and it has not been a problem, and mostly at this store because this is where we live.
Then I looked up the company policy online and found that I had been given three different versions of WalMart's so-called return policy, and all three are different from the official stated company policy.
Reading the comments here it seems obvious that WalMart's Customer Service personnel everywhere need better training, and company wide I think they should have a way for those without receipts to retrieve them themselves at the store like Menards has.
As it is, I am now much less likely to buy any item from WalMart if there is any chance that we may need to return it later.
